Many local media companies, such as newspapers and TV stations, are observing Black History Month by accomplished African American individuals in many different fields.
You might have seen some.
The many Blacks being honored in February include Esteban (usually referred to by his slave nickname of Estevanico), the 16th-century explorer. He was the first non-Indian to enter the U.S. Southwest when he entered the present states of Arizona and New Mexico in 1539. He was a slave from Morocco who was sent by Spain to the Indies, so he wasn't an African American (technically). However, his achievements are being remembered not only by Arizona and New Mexico but also across the United States.
