During the year - Ferdinand I of Austria is elected as king of Croatia, Bohenia, and Hungary. Jan. 5 – Felix Manz, a leader of the Anabaptist congregation in Zürich, is executed by drowning. Jan. 21 – Indians in Honduras kill Spanish Conquistador Juan de Grijalva. May 6 – Troops of Holy Roman Emperor Carlos V mutiny because of no pay and sack Rome, ending the Resaissance. May 30 - The Phillips University of Marburg, still in operation today, is established in Germany. June 7 – Pope Clement VII surrenders to emperor Charles V's armies. June 21–22 – Niccolo Machiavelli dies. July 28 – Spanish Conquistado Rodrigo de Bastidas dies on Cuba of injuries inflicted by his own men angered by his refusal to share gold acquired in South America. Aug. 3 — English mariner John Rut sends the first known letter from North America while at St. John's, Newfoundland. Undated – Hernán Cortés is accused of poisoning several men sent by the king from Spain to Mexico. Undated – Swiss physician Paracelsus creates an alcoholic solution of opium known as Laudanum. Undated – English King Henry VII Henry tries to force the pope into annulling his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, who had failed to provide him with a male heir.
